Do You Need Extra UV Protection?

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is harmful to the eyes. Studies show it can speed up cataract growth and retinal damage. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can also cause pinguecula, keratitis and pterygia.

In this post, we talk about the different types of people who need more UV protection for the eyes.

Construction and Outdoor Workers

Construction projects take place for hours under the sun. Other outdoor workers, such as mailmen, tend to be exposed to the sun’s UV rays as well since they work the day shift. These people must wear UV-blocking eyewear because they’re exposed to the sun during the hours when UV radiation is at its highest levels.

Outdoor Enthusiasts

Joggers, hikers, beachgoers and other outdoor enthusiasts also need extra UV protection for their eyes. Their eyewear should block UV radiation, and depending on their activity, these people might need wraparound eyewear for full protection. Those who are into snow sports should also wear appropriate UV-blocking eyewear since snow reflects the sun’s UV rays.

Young Children

Kids spend more time outdoors than the average adult. This means they’re more exposed to UV radiation, so they need extra protection for their eyes. Furthermore, the eyes of young children are also still developing, so they’re more vulnerable to the effects of UV radiation. Encourage your child to wear sunglasses every time they go out. It’s good to develop this habit while they’re still young. This way, they can start taking care of their eyes early. It might help to let them pick their sunglasses. Since they chose the sunglasses themselves, they might be more inclined to always wear them.
