How Sleeping Habits Are Related to Eye Health

Getting proper sleep regularly does not only improve your overall appearance, but it can also provide your eyes the moisture and rest they need to function at their best. However, there are times when it’s hard to get sufficient sleep due to several factors and some side effects might take place. Today, we explain the connection between sleep and vision as well as the associated impact and risks.

Positive Impact of Sufficient Sleep

When you get enough rest, your body has ample time to restore your eyes. This results in clearer eyesight, improved lubrication and healthier nerves and tissues in and around your eyes. These positive effects occur when the eyes have reached the complete stages of sleep, including the opening and closing, the stillness of the eyes and the rapid movement of eyeballs.

Negative Impact of Sleep Deprivation

From the moment you wake up to the time you go to bed, your eyes are always working. It’s important for them to get enough recovery time when you’re asleep. Failing to get enough sleep even for just one day can lead your eyes to feeling strained, dry and itchy.

Risks

Everyone knows that lack of sleep can result in dark circles and puffy eyes, but there are more serious threats that can arise from it. Here are some of the risks and side effects associated with poor sleeping habits:

  • Blurred vision
  • Vision loss
  • Eye spasms
  • Eye twitches
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Eye infections
  • Glaucoma
  • Dry eye diseases
