Puffy eyes are a common condition that most people have experienced at some point or another. Typically, puffy eyes are not a concern. In today’s post, your leading provider of quality eyeglasses, Vienna Eyecare Center, discusses possible causes of puffy eyes.
Lack of Sleep
One of the most common causes of puffy eyes is sleep deprivation. The skin below your eyes is thinner, which means your blood vessels are closer to the surface. These blood vessels dilate when you haven’t slept enough, causing puffy eyes. So, if you want to avoid puffy eyes, get enough rest as much as you can.
Fluid retention around your eyes is another cause of puffy eyes. This can be caused by having too much sodium in your diet, allergies, sinus problems and crying.
Puffy eyes are pretty much part of the package when it comes to aging. As you age, the fat deposits that support your eyes tend to sag, while tissues and muscles around your eyes weaken, leading to a puffy appearance.
While contact lenses can help you see properly, wearing them for too long can cause puffy eyes. Contacts can prevent sufficient oxygen from entering your eyes, making your cornea swell. Be sure to remove your contacts periodically to allow your eyes to breathe; this will help you avoid puffy eyes.
Unfortunately this last cause is not something you can change. Puffy eyes can be inherited and if that’s the case there’s not much to be done about it.
