The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends scheduling an eye exam once a year, but the best person to ask about how often you should do it is your eye doctor. In today’s post, Vienna Eyecare Center shares the common signs you need to schedule an appointment with your optometrist.
You Experience Headaches Around Your Eyes
Frequent headaches in the area around the temple may mean you need to upgrade your eyeglasses prescription or invest in a pair of reading glasses. If you are experiencing this every time you’re trying to focus on an object from any distance, be sure to get in touch with your eye doctor. For instance, ocular migraines, which produce zigzag spots in your vision that may temporarily blur your central or peripheral vision, may not be particularly serious but should still be examined.
Your Vision Is Blurry
Are you having a hard time reading the text on your television or mobile phone screen? If so, it’s probably time to see your eye doctor so they can prescribe you corrective eyewear such as glasses or contact lenses. More than 150 million Americans have trouble with their eyesight, from nearsightedness to farsightedness. Vision problems not only make it difficult to see clearly but may also cause headaches. This happens because your eyes may not be focusing as they should.
You Have a Hard Time Seeing at Night
If you can’t see clearly in low light, your optometrist may recommend special eyeglasses that come with blue light-filtering lenses and anti-glare coating. These are beneficial if you are driving at night or working a job that requires you to use a computer screen for long periods. If the glare persists even with the use of these eyeglasses, it could be an indication of cataracts, especially for individuals over age 50.
You Can’t Remember the Last Time You Saw Your Doctor
When was the last time you scheduled an eye exam? If you can’t remember, chances are it’s been a while. Scheduling one as soon as possible is extremely important for the health of your eyes. Many eye diseases may go unnoticed and continue to worsen over time. As such, you should ask your doctor how often you should schedule an exam. In most cases, it may depend on your age. If you have a family history of eye disease, however, you will need to visit your doctor annually.
