If you have plans of going to the beach or swimming in a pool, your trusted optometrist at Vienna Eyecare Center has some tips to help keep your eyes protected.
Chlorine is typically present in swimming pools because it keeps the water free of germs and bacteria. However, keep in mind that chlorine is a chemical that can also irritate your eyes, particularly the tear film or the layer of tears coating the surface of your eyes. Eye irritation due to pool chemicals usually comes with symptoms like redness and a gritty feeling in the eye. You can prevent your eyes from getting irritated from chlorine by wearing goggles.
Flush Out Your Eyes With Artificial Tears
Flush your eyes out with artificial tears after getting out of the water. This can help restore the pH of your eye and ensure irritants are removed from your eyes. Make sure to only use artificial tears recommended by your eye doctor. Never use tap water to flush out your eyes because this type of water can harbor different kinds of bacteria including acanthamoeba.
Remove Your Contact Lenses
Don’t forget to take out your contacts before getting in the water. Wearing contact lenses while swimming increases your risk of corneal infection. Furthermore, opening your eyes in the water while still wearing contacts can cause bacteria and chemicals to cling on the lenses and remain in your eye for a longer period. It’s also possible for bacteria to slip underneath your contacts and stay on the surface of your eye.
