Like any other technology, virtual reality (VR) headsets come with some pros and cons. Some people are particularly concerned about their effects on the eyes.
VR technology uses two screens that are equivalent to two phone screens placed next to each other. This allows the device to accommodate both your eyes and achieve in-depth visual immersion. There is currently no evidence of long-term eye issues associated with prolonged VR use. However, it can trigger some eye conditions.
Virtual reality allows you to explore a new world. When used in games, it allows players to feel like they’re part of a universe. Many experts have also started using VR for eye therapy and vision correction. Some professionals use it to aid and improve their patient’s eye coordination, depth perception and hand-eye coordination. VR has also been a great help to patients who have poor reaction time to visual stimuli and are suffering from lazy eye or amblyopia.
Many researchers who are looking into VR’s effects on the eyes have found that the device can cause eye strain, dry eye and motion sickness. In some cases, VR headsets can also cause heterophoria, a condition where both eyes point in different directions after using VR or while resting.
If you don’t feel any symptoms worsening while using VR, you can continue using it for entertainment or therapy. However, make sure to take breaks between sessions. If you are feeling some negative effects from the use of VR headsets, see an eye doctor, and have your eyes examined.
If you have more questions about the effects of VR headsets on the eyes, Vienna Eyecare Center would be happy to answer them. Schedule your appointment by calling (703) 938-7633 or filling out this contact form.
