4 Warning Signs of Eye Problems in Adults

FacebookFacebookTwitterTwitterLinkedInLinkedInEmailEmailShareShare

The importance of undergoing regular comprehensive eye exams only increases as you grow older. Many eye conditions are asymptomatic in the early stages, making them very difficult to detect without an eye exam. If you do notice changes in your vision or the appearance of your eyes, you need to investigate it immediately. Early detection and prompt treatment can help preserve your vision.

Today, your expert optometrist from Vienna Eyecare Center discusses signs of eye problems in adults:

  1. Decreased Tear Production – Age is a major factor when it comes to dry eye syndrome. In addition, hormonal changes occur as you age, which might also increase your risk of developing dry eyes. Symptoms of dry eyes include dryness and irritation in your eyes and lack of tears. This condition can generally be managed with artificial tear drops.
  2. Sudden Blurring or Loss of Vision – If you see halos around lights or floaters in your visual field, you should schedule an eye exam as soon as possible. These symptoms are commonly associated with serious eye conditions including macular degeneration and cataracts. If you experience curtain-like blockage across your visual field or sudden vision loss, this could indicate retinal detachment. This is an emergency, so contact your eye doctor right away.
  3. Reduced Visual Acuity in Dark Places – Photoreceptors in your retina are known as rods and cones. The rods allow you to see in low-light, while the cones help you distinguish colors. As you grow older, these rods and cones may decrease in quantity, resulting in difficulty seeing in dark places or distinguishing between different hues.
  4. Difficulties Doing Other Close-Range Activities – The lenses in your eyes can lose flexibility as you age, which can lead to presbyopia. If you struggle to see clearly when reading or doing other close-range work, contact your doctor for an eye exam. Fortunately, there are many ways to treat presbyopia, including wearing bifocal or multifocal glasses or contact lenses.
