Cataract Prevention: Diet and Lifestyle Tips

FacebookFacebookTwitterTwitterLinkedInLinkedInEmailEmailShareShare

Cataracts are one of the leading causes of blindness, with cataract removal being one of the most common surgical procedures performed in the United States. Fortunately, making changes in your diet and lifestyle can lower your odds of developing cataracts. In this blog, eye doctor Vienna Eyecare Center shares tips that can help in cataract prevention.

Watch Your Diet

Research shows that eating foods rich in antioxidants like vitamins C and E may help prevent cataracts or slow the growth rate of cataracts if you already have them. Foods rich in vitamin C include citrus fruits such as lemon, grapefruit and lime, as well as vegetables such as broccoli, potatoes and brussels sprouts.

Nuts such as almonds and peanuts, along with green vegetables like spinach and kale, are rich in vitamin E. Lutein is a nutrient that’s naturally found in green leafy vegetables, yellow carrots and egg yolks, which may also help reduce the risks of cataracts. Before taking any supplements, talk to your doctor.

Wear Sunglasses When You’re Outdoors

Wearing the right kind of sunglasses can help lower your risk of developing cataracts. You may already be familiar with the dangers of ultraviolet (UV) rays, such as damaging proteins in the eyes. Look for sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of UVA and UVB rays. If you have to wear prescription eyeglasses, either have prescription sunglasses made, or switch to photochromic lenses, which darken when exposed to sunlight.

Quit Smoking

Smoking is bad for the lungs and heart; it’s also bad for your eyes. Cigarette smoke promotes the development of free radicals in the eyes, which harm healthy cells and reduce the amount of antioxidants you derive from your diet. Smoking also produces toxins that can cause cataracts.
