Pros and Cons of Progressive (Multifocal) Lenses

Your vision naturally changes as you age. Eventually, your optometrist will recommend wearing reading glasses or bifocals. Individuals over 40 years old usually benefit from progressive lenses.

Read on to learn what progressive lenses are and their pros and cons.

What Are Progressive Lenses?

Also called multifocal lenses, progressives can correct both nearsightedness and farsightedness. They are also beneficial for people with presbyopia, an eye condition that causes nearby objects to appear blurry. Progressive lenses allow you to see clearly at all distances because they have multiple vision correction powers.

Advantages of Progressive Lenses

With progressive lenses, you do not have to switch between different eyeglasses. You will have a single pair that meets all your needs.

Bifocals and trifocals have lines separating different powers. Progressive lenses do not have them, providing a more natural and unobstructed field of vision. Compared to other types of lenses, they provide better vision correction.

Are Progressive Lenses Right for You?

While progressive lenses offer many benefits, they are not ideal for everyone. You will need to consult your eye doctor to know if it suits you. If you’re considering them, ask about your options to help you make the best decision for your needs.

Moreover, progressive lenses can take some time to get used to because your eyes need to adjust to the different lens powers. It can take at least a week for them to feel comfortable. These lenses might not work for you if you have a very high prescription or severe astigmatism. Progressive lenses can also cost more than other lenses since they offer more comprehensive vision correction.
