There is evidence a person is more likely to develop nearsightedness or myopia if their parents have it. It’s the same for people with parents who are farsighted or have hyperopia. Both of these refractive errors occur due to inherited genetic markers. It may help to know that most vision-related problems are associated with genetics. 

Another vision condition that you may get from your parents is presbyopia. It usually affects people who are 40 and older. This condition makes it harder to see objects or text up close. If your parents had it, you might experience similar symptoms as they did. Regularly seeing your eye care provider can help with the early detection and management of presbyopia. 

Do Eye Diseases Run in the Family?

Two of the most common causes of blindness worldwide can be inherited. Studies show that glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are more likely to run in the blood than to develop randomly. Glaucoma occurs when fluid builds up in the eye and increases eye pressure, causing optic nerve damage. Individuals with family members who have glaucoma are nine times more likely to get it. Meanwhile, age-related macular degeneration compromises the central part of the retina, resulting in vision loss or distorted vision. The possibility of developing is three to four times greater in people with relatives affected by the condition.
